Laboratory support for a number of endemic diseases is available from two small, well run Laboratories at the Belize Agricultural Health (BAHA) offices both in Orange Walk and Central Farm, while tests for other diseases including some not present in the country and for new or emerging diseases are done at laboratories in Guatemala, Nicaragua, Panama and the USA. Also, a residue testing laboratory has been recently set up at Central Investigation Laboratory (CIL) of BAHA in Belize City. Likewise, a new PCR laboratory is now operational and is conducting testing for OIE listed terrestrial and Aquatic Diseases. This laboratory allows for an early detection and rapid response in the event of a disease outbreak given a short turn around period from time of submission to the time of receiving results.
